Whatever Wednesday ~ Valentine’s Day Shirts

on February 21, 2012

I know I said I’d be back with this post last week and then Wednesday had passed before I knew it so I wrote the title on Thursday and never had a chance to do anything else so here we area on Wednesday, again, and I’m finally posting about this! YAY

These shirts were actually pretty easy. I had a lot of fun making them. The baby’s shirt was actually the hardest. I wanted to do a zigzag stitch because I thought it would look cool. I should’ve just done a regular stitch!! lol Especially since this is the first thing I’ve sewn in over 4 years and I’ve never been good at sewing!! I can’t even sew a straight line!! How did I think I could sew around a heart with a zigzag stitch? hehe

Anyway, here’s what I did:

I did the baby’s shirt first:

I had actually only planned on making the 2 older boy shirts and figured the baby could live without one, but then I had this stained shirt and some red felt and figured it would work out perfectly for a Vday shirt. So I did it!

I used the same stencil for the hearts here as I did for the Valentine’s day wreath. I traced and then cut them out. I pinned them on the shirt how I wanted them to be sewed and then set to work.

I started with the bottom one first, thinking that would be the best. It started out well, but once I started to turn around that last hump of the first heart I started spazzing out. I let it go to far and it went a little bit off of the felt. I tried getting it back on, but it didn’t work. I ended the sewing and moved onto the next heart. I figured I could either live with it or fix it later.

Can you see that? Pretty bad, huh? But I was pretty proud of the rest of the sewing on that heart.

For the 2 other shirts I had wanted to buy some fabric at the store and use that for their hearts, but I never got  around to it and we didn’t really have the money for it either. I was browsing on pinterest, of course, for other ideas when I came across this one for making a heart out of ribbon. I LOVED the idea! I happened to have Vday ribbons so I pulled them out. Mark didn’t like the idea of me making a “girly” shirt for his boys so I changed it up a bit and made a heart with boy colors on it instead. I LOVE how they turned out!!

They were very excited about wearing their boyish Valentine’s day shirts to school. I really think they would’ve been fine with Vday colored ribbon, but oh well. I like them this way and now they can wear them whenever and not just around Valentine’s day.

Here’s how I made them, first I cut out a heart shape with my handy, dandy Silhouette Cameo. Then I traced with a light grey marker on the shirt. I then tediously measured out all the ribbons one by one. It took forever, but that’s what you do when you make diy projects, right?

I pinned a few of the ribbons down, but didn’t really like how it was working while pinning it so I decided to just hot glue them in a small spot in the middle so they wouldn’t fall off.

Here they are ready to be sewn together. My first idea on how to sew them was to go around the heart shape, but as I thought about it more and more as I was cutting the ribbon, the less appealing it sounded, especially since I had a hard time with Tini’s heart sewing. So I decided to do a line down the middle and depending on how that went maybe I would attempt to do an outline.

I chose a light blue thread that matched the colors. I pondered on doing pink to make it a little more Valentine’s dayish, but my husband out ruled that. lol He’s not a fan of pink.

Sorry this picture is so blurry, I was using my phone and that thing is so light compared to my big humongous camera that I often move too much for it.

And here’s the first shirt all finished. I felt so good after finishing it!! I know it’s not much and not even hard, but I have a problem making the simplest things SO HARD!

And here they are both finished. I didn’t finish the second one until 11:00 at night so I forgot to take a picture of it. It pretty much looked the same as the one above. I’m really glad I decided to do it this way!!

I love them! I have so much ribbon – I could make dozens of shirts – and sewing along the ribbon was the best idea – so much easier than worrying about the edge catching in the machine foot and messing up your design. Those boys look downright manly in their shirts (that’s for your husband’s benefit!).

Yeah, making valentine shirts for boys, I’m sure is a bit tricky. for girls, it’s easy: pink or red hearts and you’re there.
