Tasty Thursday with Meggy! ~ Homemade Pretzels

on March 27, 2013

I know you’re used to reading about Tasty Thursday with Kaylee, my sister, but she needed to take a break for a while so you’re stuck with me. I hope I can do as good a job as Kaylee did!

***

I told you this week I’m trying to be better about doing stuff with my kids since they’re home all day. We did a craft on Monday, Tuesday we went to doctor appointments and watched a movie together, and yesterday we made Pretzels for lunch!! Woohoo!! Yeah, I’m going all out!

I don’t know about you, but I don’t normally cook with my kids. I don’t normally cook. PERIOD. It’s just NOT my thing!! I am so blessed to have a husband who is really good at it and actually enjoys doing it, mostly. 🙂 My specialty in the kitchen is banana bread or, lately, chocolate chip cookies. BUT we just got a new mixer….. Oh, yeah!! We got a KITCHENAID!!! I’ve been wanting one since we were married 10 years ago and we finally broke down and bought one about a month ago. And she’s a BEAUTY!!!

RIGHT?!! I’m glad we got the red one. It makes me feel… sophisticated. Why? I don’t know, I think it’s something about the color red. It’s not really my favorite color. I don’t really even like the color (sorry, Mom and Brynnan, and anyone else that does), but there are times when I can’t keep my eyes off of it. And when we were looking at what color to buy, between black and red, I just HAD to have the RED!!

ANYWAY, I found the recipe on pinterest, I think. I can’t really remember, but here’s the website I was led to and the recipe that she used. I thought it would be something fun and easy to make with the boys. I did not read through the whole recipe until the night before we made it and realized that I would have to boil the dough before cooking it?!! Who knew?!! I was determined to still try it out and see how it went.

I made the dough by myself. My boys were busy playing and actually getting along, so I let them be.

Before the dough had risen.                                                      After the dough rose.

The recipe says to put the bowl in a warm place so it will rise faster. I don’t really have a place like that in my house. The sun wasn’t really shining anyway, so that wasn’t much help. I decided to put it in the bathroom with the heat turned up high and the door shut. I’m not sure that it really helped. I forgot to time how long it was in there for.

After it rose Brynnan helped me roll out the dough into 24 inch long strips. This was the fun part! 🙂

We then boiled each pretzel for 30 seconds, placed them on the cookie sheet, brushed them with the egg mixture and sprinkled salt on top.

Brynnan’s pretzel kind of fell apart after it was boiled.

Once they were all boiled and brushed with the topping they cooked for 12 minutes and cooled for 5.

Then we ate them!

And the verdict was…. they were… good! 🙂 LOL

Brynnan loved them. Jonas didn’t want to try them and by the time they were done cooking Tinian was napping so he didn’t try them either. Mark had some when he got home and said he liked them. I thought they were ok. I think I didn’t put enough water in the egg yolk mixture on top of the pretzels so it tasted kind of eggy to me.

I will try doing this again, someday. It was pretty easy, I think I just tried to do it at the wrong time! I had planned on making the dough in the morning, letting it rise for a few hours and then boiling and cooking them at noon. Well, that didn’t happen and by the time I got around to making the dough it was noon. Needless, to say, we snacked at 1:00 and Brynnan and I ate our pretzels at 2:30. Next time I will follow through with my plan. I’m sure it will go over much better.

Thanks for stopping by today! I hope you have a great Thursday!
